"'Life's Short. Get a Divorce' Billboard Removed After Just a Week"

Very interesting article about a clever law firm marketing strategy from the Associated Press:

"A racy billboard proclaiming, 'Life's short. Get a divorce,' caused such an uproar that city workers stripped it from its downtown Chicago perch after a week.

"It wasn't so much about the partially clothed man and woman on the law firm's ad. It was the phrase that lawyers Corri Fetman and Kelly Garland chose that drew scores of complaints from neighbors and from other attorneys who said it reflected poorly on their profession."

"The prenup dramas of lawyers in love"

Ah, how to keep true love on track given lawyers' arguments over prenup agreements?

"When lawyers fall head over heels, love can be a many stipulated thing.

[snip]

"Some divorce attorneys say lawyers are no worse than any other not-very-star-crossed lovers trying to protect their worldly assets. Others have examples that show they can indeed be worse.

"Top Houston family law expert Earle Lilly knows all too well how a legal mind can spoil affairs of the heart. While arguing about what he wanted in his own prenup, he managed to disenchant his fiancée and they called the whole thing off.

"As Lilly recalls, it was something about how he wanted none of his high-dollar salary to become community property.

"His next attempt at marriage went a little better. He said his wife-to-be objected vociferously, during a national TV appearance no less, to the prenup as 'marriage by contract.' They abandoned the prenup and the marriage lasted seven years.

"'Lawyers are more difficult to deal with. They want more than they should be asking for. Sometimes the requests in a prenup are plain unconscionable,' Lilly said."

Britney Pre-nup 'Airtight'

I'm not really a Britney fan, but it sounds like she's got a solid pre-nup agreement:

"She has been dismissed as simply a bubble-headed pop princess.

"So when Britney Spears filed for divorce last week after two stormy years of marriage to Kevin Federline - now dubbed Fed-Ex - many assumed it would cost the 24-year-old singer a hefty chunk of her reported £65million fortune.

"Britney wanted every penny protected by the pre-nup and ordered her vast legal team to draw up a list of all her worldwide assets, held in a myriad of companies including Britney Brands, BritneyFilms, Britney Online, Britney Touring, Fairy Zone Productions, One More Time Music and Britney Television."

Wow, she owns such a big empire!

'Ways to get along without lawyers'

Did you know that the CA Legal Document Assistants Association is now 20 years old & has 225 members?

"Ed Sherman started a revolution 35 years ago when he wrote How to Do Your Own Divorce in California. Since then, millions of people have found they needn't resort to the adversarial and expensive step of hiring a lawyer to reach a divorce settlement. A new industry — independent paralegal services — was born.

"Sherman, 68, an attorney since 1971 and co-founder of Divorce Helpline, which has an office at 615 Mission St. in Santa Cruz, is still going strong. The author of 18 books, he has a new one coming out to help couples stay together.

"He will be among the featured speakers at the annual conference of the California Association of Legal Document Assistants Friday through Sunday in Ontario. The group has 225 members and will mark its 20th anniversary this year."
